What's Your Rupture 2007

By Zach Stephenson

Is it just us or is What’s Your Rupture becoming the Mussolini-like don of hipster labels?

They give us Love is All, followed by UK imports like the Long Blondes, and then they release Fucked Up and now this? Where’s the inhaler? It’s a matter of days before Rick Rubin rubs his distended belly to summon Paul Potts and blow their lovely house down.

TYVEK are a slug-and-drug garage quartet that occasionally share sails with the Black Lips, while partying in that band’s late-garage hype and all over the AIDS-struck skull of Black Randy.

Their lyrics are so simplified you won’t notice: “I spent too many nights at home/ I’m tired of the afterthoughts / Tired of the wading pools.” Their songs are midweek office daydreams that run off with the money, the drugs and attitude to spare, only to sweat and smile off the brutal hangovers in rooms lacking AC.

This band formed inside the dirt-drawn Detroit square used by Iggy and the MC5, and maybe that’s why their a-go-go energy feels so real. Time and complacency disappear in their presence and, hopefully, so will your watch.

This discourse of TYVEK's Summer Burns is written by Zach Stephenson for ignore Magazine, copyright 2007.
