Pop Levi
The Return to Form Black Magick Party

Counter/Ninja Tune 2007

By Stanley Shuford

His middle name is Pop, his last is probably Levi, he’s from the UK and he’s done being a bass-player for Ladytron, I guess it’s predestined dandyism and the hating that comes with it or classy hands-in-blazer reclusion. Thus, this guy’s backstage has to be stocked with lovely ex-Devendra girls who smoke hash and wanna go fuck in Indian tents on the beach. Here, watch these videos and avoid all interviews with his talk of “astral” influence and “scrying” (staring into cracked glass until you find God).

It will rip you apart how much of this can pass for The Slider when you’re shit-faced, and you can tell people it’s just that at parties (but why would you) and nobody okay would question that it’s definitive Bolan. Sober, it’s frustratingly upbeat and ego-crazy, like surprisingly good Supergrass. I’m sorry, I can’t review this. I can’t take it seriously, because I'm in America (i.e. not L.A.).
